Invisible Child

Generally I reserve Wednesday's for a Fit Chick post but while prowling the status updates on my Facebook timeline I came across a story in the New York Times that just grabbed my attention and would not let go.  The article is called "Invisible Child-Girl in The Shadows:  Dasani's Homeless Life" written by Andrea Elliott (photographs by Ruth Fremson).  Dasani's Homeless Life is the tale of 11 year old Dasani, her everyday struggle in an ever-changing city and her fight to overcome a life riddled with homelessness.

This story is moving, sad, filled with hope, and nonetheless needs to be told.  Along with Dasani there are millions of other homeless and hungry children that need their stories to be told.  This article gives us a small glimpse into their lives.  Their stories and circumstances may be different but they all are just as heart-wrenching.   I encourage as many as possible to read this article, it is poignant and beautifully written.

Beauty Bit: The Perfect Nude

One of the few things that I've always had a hard time finding in my never-ending search for all things that are pretty is the perfect nude nail polish.  Well,  I'd like everyone to know that I've finally found one that I love.  It's by NYC and it's called Fashion Safari.

It's all I've been wearing on my nails.  It's just perfect for the office and it's very classy. Also, it only cost me a little over $1.  It was an awesome deal.  It only took two coats to achieve that all-over even coverage that I love (even with my clumsy technique) and it actually does dry pretty quickly.  So if you ladies are looking for a great nude polish I'd say that this is it, well at least in my book.

Thanks for reading.

Support Cassy Renee

"A really great talent finds its happiness in execution."
-Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Every so often in life we are fortunate enough to come in contact with people who are intelligent, talented, and an agent of positivity.  While pursuing my undergraduate degree at Columbia College I had such an opportunity when I met Cassy Renee.  She is an awesome friend and as I've stated she is insanely talented.  She sings and after putting in so much hard work to garner a local following she is finally ready to begin recording in the studio.  She needs to raise $2000 by the end of March and she needs our help doing that.  You can help her by going to http://www.gofundme.com/5ndgwk.  No donation is too small or unappreciated.  Thank you.

Think I'm being biased...check her out for yourself.

Reflection: A True Hero

As many of you already know Nelson Mandela passed away yesterday at the age of 95.  His passing is not just a loss for South Africans but for the entire world.  However, there is much to celebrated in terms of what he accomplished and those that he inspired.  He was courageous and there is much to be learned from the life that he lived.

I chose not to post my typical post today because I would like to take the time to reflect on not only the life of such a valiant man but also on my life as well.  What can I take from the lessons that he taught?  How can I be a better person?  Yesterday we lost a visionary.  Someone who dedicated their life to teaching peace and love.  I lost someone that I admire immensely.

"No one person is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background or his religion.  People learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."
-Nelson Mandela

Style Inspiration: Kerry Washington

Lately Kerry Washington's style has garnered her the amount of praise that many women would die for.  Not afraid to go bold with bright colors but equally unafraid of wearing an all white ensemble, she is a true style icon (in my opinion).  She's classy, smart, and sophisticated and she exudes that very well in her choice of dress.  Check out some of her looks...

This ensemble alone spawned my love of red lipstick.

Oh, Kerry you're so chic and Scandal is such an amazing show.  Well hope you enjoyed.  Check out Scandal tonight at 10 pm Eastern on ABC.

Try Something New

"Don't fear failure so much that you refuse to try new things.  The saddest summary of a life contains three descriptions:  could have, might have,
and should have."
-Louis E. Boone

The unknown is a scary place.  We fear the unknown because it brings the possibility of failure but how often do we reminisce about a situation and what the outcome could have been had we tried something new?  My mom always said that people don't mind trying new things as long as they're exactly like the old ones.  Trying new things is important and intricate in the human experience.  It's garners growth, creativity, and keeps you from becoming bored.  That rut that a lot of us go through is a rut that we've created by staying in our normal mundane routine.  Trying new things is our key to getting out of that rut.  So where should you start?  Well I compiled a list of 5 small things you can do that will allow you to venture into the unknown so read up and go forth young grasshoppers.

1.  Start small.  Do something that makes you nervous, like going to the movies by yourself or going to dinner alone.
2.  Take a class to learn a new skill. Karate maybe or even ballet just sign up for it.  Your goal isn't to become an expert you're just trying something new.
3. Hang out with new people.  You know that coworker that you always decline when she invites you out, well next time don't decline.
4.  Compliment a stranger.  It's a great way to start a conversation and everyone likes to be complimented.
5.  Volunteer somewhere.  First of all you're helping others and you'll get the added advantage of meeting new people.

Trying new things may not always lead to something monumental but it's better than nothing.   So get up, get out, and just try something new.

Until next time...XOXO

Apologies & Annoucement

I know you all are probably sick and tired of reading my apologies for not posting more but I promise what I have been going through is huge.  My life as I know it is about to change.  Yes I'm dramatic but seriously it's about to change and it's all because......

I am expecting We are expecting our little bundle of joy early July 2014.  I wanted to wait until after the first trimester but my doctor says that everything looks fine so I decided to make the announcement earlier.  It just so happens that I came back from our vacation with a bigger souvenir than I expected.

I'm currently 8 weeks along and super excited.  Dad is also excited and very anxious about us not living so far apart from one another (he currently lives 5 hours away).  So far the only symptoms I have are nausea, fatigue, and back pain.  All of which are very welcome as long as my little one is healthy.

Soon I'll begin posting pictures to document the weeks to come.

Thanks for reading :)

Fit Chick Wednesday: My Fitness Journey

I started my fitness journey about a month ago.  I had seriously let go and nothing seemed to satisfy me.  I was slipping down a long and all to familiar hole back to the person that I used to be all because what I had planned did not come to fruition.  However, that story is for another post.  So where did I start?

Okay so to begin with I have always been thin, but in my mind I was never thin enough.  So to make a long story short I chose to partake in the very unhealthy habit of limiting my food intake.  I'm talking 1000 or less calories per day and the least that I could get away with the better.  So eventually through my extreme actions I was down to about 97 lbs.  Now at 5'7 and 24 years old this weight is considered underweight.  Soon everyone began to take notice but no one seemed to understand.  They'd joke and say that I needed to eat or even try to give me more food but in my eyes my body was perfect.  Well if I was perfect what changed?

Well around my 25th birthday my current boyfriend and I started dating and going out led to me more and eventually I gained weight but it was unhealthy weight.  Nothing about this was 'pretty' in my eyes.  However, my boyfriend was happy because as he put it, I was no longer starving myself.  So he began to hint towards me looking at healthier options if I wasn't happy with my body.  So I began researching.  Now also around this time the 'curvy movement' was in full effect and I felt as though I was lacking 'back there' if you get what I mean.  So I began my journey to get a flat stomach and a bigger butt.  Yep, it was all about aesthetics. Aesthetics?! I thought this was a fitness journey.

Yes, I began working out to become 'bootylicious' (I hate that word),
but so far working out enabled me to become more confident.  I am able to do things that never thought I'd be able to do.  I can run a mile, I can complete more than half of a push up, and I've managed to make so many friends (my gym friends).  With that confidence I stopped focusing on being curvy/skinny and more on being fit because now in my mind fit equals happy.  I've added some healthy weight and I'm not done yet.  I want to be the best me that I can be.  So now the fun part...progress pictures.

 October 2013              November 2013

We all have our idea of what our ideal body is and sometimes we need a little push to get us started.  I'm here to be that push.  Get up and get healthy.  Help your body perform at it's optimal level.  Do some research, join a gym, find a workout buddy, drink water, move around more, or waste away.  If you need help feel free to contact me, I am always willing to help and even do some research for you.

I hope you enjoyed and thank you.

Fit Chick Wednesday: Eating Clean

A lot of people ask me how often I work out in order to keep my figure.  My answer is generally 3 to 5 times per week (seems like a lot but I sit at a desk all day).  However, I wholeheartedly believe that while working out is good much of my success as far as fitness is because of my diet.  I eat clean majority of the time and my meals are generally smaller.  So what is eating clean?

Okay, clean eating centers around consuming food that is as close to it's natural state as possible.  Not to be confused with a raw food diet, you can still cook your food but try not to add much.  Also steer clear of refined sugars and become label conscious.  Also, whenever possible try to buy organic items.  I generally eat 5 to 6 small meals per day (2 are generally snacks). It will take some research but eventually it will become easy.  Remember this is not a diet it is a lifestyle change.  Anytime that you're making such a drastic change it will be hard and you'll want to give up but don't it's worth the pain.  Also, remember that water is important.  I do not drink soda or many juices because that's too much sugar.

Don't know what to buy?  No problem I've found a shopping list for you.

Well there you have it.  Being healthy isn't just about exercise.  You have to fuel your body with the appropriate foods.  You will not see results overnight but you will see results, trust me.

Here's a list of other resources to help you get started.

Fall Beauty Wishlist

Hello angel faces :)

I don't make it a habit of buying new things very often (responsible spending is key) so I like to get everything in one shopping trip.  Today I bring you the fall beauty items that I foresee myself purchasing within the near future. Hope you enjoy.

1.  Eau de Lune-Laura Mercier
I just absolutely love this scent.  It is so light and floral.  I've heard people say that it fades quickly but that has never been the case with me.  It reminds me of summer and spring, which is probably why I adore it.

2.  Hang Up (Lipcolor)-MAC
I have never been one for deep hues but recently I am obsessed with them.  They scream sophistication and class. Especially now that fall is here and the leaves are changing.  It fits right into the color scheme of this 'cozy-up' weather.

3. Maybelline Great Lash Mascara in Royal Blue
I did a photo shoot once and the makeup artist outfitted me with the prettiest royal blue mascara that I had ever seen.  Now I am hooked.  I have to have this.

4.  All Natural Shea Butter
I am a big fan of all-natural products.  Not only is shea butter good for the skin but it is also good for the hair.

5.  Avanti's Silicon Mix Conditioner
My former hairdresser used this in my hair and would never tell me what is was when I asked about it...I guess it was her secret.  Well after much snooping (don't judge) I figured out what it was.  This stuff is amazing.

It's My Birthday!

Whoop whoop, guess what day it is...give up?  It's my birthday!  Yay, for me and candy and gifts and all the extra attention.  So far I've gotten brownies, candy, and cards.  I've only been at work for about an hour and a half.  My job may stress me out a little but I work with some exceptional people.  Everyone has just been so awesome today.  I am truly appreciative and grateful.

Fit Chick Wednesday

Okay so Wednesdays will be a little different on C'est La Dee as I will be bringing you Fit Chick Wednesdays.  In case you don't know I am  a what people would call a fitness junkie.  At first my fitness journey started out as me wanting to look good but now it's all about my health.  I'm always trying to improve.  Yes, looking good is one of the added benefits of choosing a healthy lifestyle but for me it is not the most important anymore.

Fit Chick Wednesdays will be all about fitness and healthy lifestyle tips.  I am not a personal trainer and I have no formal education/training as it pertains to fitness but I know what worked for me and if you're up to it...it may work for you too.

So without further ado my first Fit Chick Wednesday post is an at home cardio workout by Fitness Blender that is sure to burn calories and make you sweat.

The Active Prepared Life: Limitations

Though are often physical limitations that affect us all (for example:  humans can't fly) there are no limitations on what we can accomplish (example: we made planes so that we could fly).  The only limitations that apply to us are the ones that we create for ourselves.  Often times we think of something great then never go after it because we feel as though we are not talented enough, we don't have enough experience, or aren't smart enough.  In our minds we're not good enough to accomplish what we wish for.  Now is the time to stop that.  If we think of it then we can accomplish it.  It doesn't matter what everyone else is saying.

My mom always told me, 'Let them talk, but if they had an ounce of the guts you have they'd be trying too.'  When many of us were children we did things without even thinking about the consequences.  Yes, this is dangerous when not controlled, but why can't we apply this gusto to our adult lives.  We know what's safe and unsafe.  We rationalize the hell out of our doubts.  We make our imaginary inadequacies actualities because we believe in them more than we believe in ourselves and what we can accomplish.

This is what I've been dealing with recently.  I am probably the most prominent doctor of my own limitations.  I seek a better paying job and all I think when I'm filling out applications is 'No you don't have enough experience' or 'You're not qualified for that' but it stops now.  No more limiting myself by what I believe I can accomplish.  I've accomplished a good bit so far in life but that fear of failure stops me every time I seek something better.  No more fear, any failure that I encounter will be lesson, a stepping stone of sorts because I'm not perfect and there will be shortcomings.

Goals for this week

Life:
1. Stay positive and focused.
2. Go after what you want and don't let anyone (especially yourself) tell you that you can't do it.

Vacation Files: The Whole Shebang

Well as you can tell I took full advantage of my vacation and once again neglected my blogging duties. I'm sorry but I really needed this vacation.

Well, my boyfriend along with his son went to Chicago to meet up with a few friends.  It was an awesome vacation except for one minor (Major!!!) problem.  I completely forgot to pack my makeup.  I was so upset and almost in tears because by the time I realized that I had no makeup we were too far along to go back.  However, I have an amazing boyfriend who immediately noticed that I was in distress (near tears) and he took his time (and money) and bought me some makeup.  He is truly an awesome guy.  Well other than that the vacation went very well.

We stayed for about 4 days and basically went sightseeing.  Nine times out of ten the most exciting portion of any vacation for me will be the food and this trip was no exception.  We went to Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Restaurant and of course after many recommendations we went to Giordano's Pizza.  When I say that you have no idea what deep dish pizza is until you try this pizza you have to believe me.  It was excellent.  Majority of our days were spent at the Navy Pier and if I wasn't such a loser I probably would have taken pictures.  I always forget to take pictures and it's such a shame.

Does anyone else have a problem with remembering to take pictures while on vacation?
For some odd reason I always forget and I get much too wrapped up in the moment.  I don't even take pictures of myself.  I'm such a loser.

Pictures or no pictures the vacation was great.  After we left Chicago I stayed at my boyfriend's house for about 3 days just so that we could spend some much needed time together (we about 5 hours apart). It gave us some time to settle back into our normal routine as well.  Now it's back to work for the both of us.

The Vacation Files: The Prelude

So tomorrow marks the beginning of my week long vacation with my boyfriend and instead of relaxing and getting organized I decided to go to work.  Bummer....who does this?  I'm not sure why I would choose work of all places to go but here I am.

Now generally this would be a time of relaxation but of course for me it isn't.  I went into work because I know that someone will be covering for me but I would like my area to be as tidy and organized as possible.  I haven't packed because I need to get a few items out of storage and I also need to do my laundry.  Oh and I have to get an oil change before I leave.  I remember last week I was hoping that my vacation would get here quickly but now I just want time to slow down so that I can get these things done.  Oh and did I mention that I'm babysitting tonight.  All of this needs to be done by 9 am tomorrow.  Well it's not all bad.  I mean I'm doing these things so that I can have fun and relax.  This also serves as a lesson...planning is key.

Where do you guys think I'm going?

Stay tuned in for The Vacation Files:  Day One

I'm Back!

First I'd like to apologize for neglecting my blogging duties for so long (it's been almost 2 weeks since my last post).  Things became a little too overwhelming for me and so I took some time to gather myself and my thoughts.  Okay the true story is that I sat in front of my computer this morning and told myself either you get it together or you let it go...I decided to get it together.  Big girls cry but they don't give up.   So here I am.   I have a lot of exciting things to share and there's nothing more in this world that I'd like better than sharing them with you all.  So with that being said here's what I have in store....

Just Enjoy The Show

Eye of the Tiger!!
A lot of times we get so wrapped up in our troubles and hard times seem to be around every corner that we lose sight of everything else.  Nope, everything is not it's best but everything isn't at its worst either.  Don't be a loser when it feels like you're losing control try to step back and look at everything.  You can't control life's circumstances but you can control your reaction it what life brings.  Life is a beautiful struggle and when I feel like I'm losing control I just sit back and enjoy the show.  I've never gotten any use out of worrying and neither will you.  When things aren't in your control be calm, be still and watch what happens.  Trying to fight what you can't change is only wasting the energy that you could be putting towards something else.

Amazing All-Natural Beauty Tips

Recently I've tried my best to stay away from products that contain too many chemicals and honestly it  has been the best thing that I've decided to do.  My skin is clearer, I have fewer breakouts, and I'm saving a lot of money.  So if you want to know the all natural beauty secrets that I swear by keep reading.

1.  Coconut Oil+Banana+Honey Hair Mask
This combination is the ultimate deep conditioner.  It's great for decreasing hair loss and soothing dry itchy scalp.  The honey acts as a humectant and helps retain moisture in the hair.  This hair mask consistently delivers.  Also, if you don't feel comfortable mixing your own conditioner try adding a little coconut oil to your normal conditioner, it makes a difference.

2.  Tomato+Avocado Face Mask
I use this mask to treat acne (and the scars), brighten my skin, and remove the impurities. I place the ingredients in a blender and then blend until it's as smooth as it can possibly get.  I then was my face with my usual cleanser and warm water (always warm water to open my pores) and I apply the mask.  I leave it on for about 30-45 mins then rinse with cool water. I always finish up by moisturizing with coconut oil.

3.  Rose Petals+Filtered Water+Witch Hazel+Glycerine Toner
I can not praise this mixture enough because not only does it act as a toner but it is effective as a setting spray as well.  Just boil the rose petals in the filtered water add about 8-10 drops of glycerin and then 8-10 drops of witch hazel.  Let it cool then place in a dark bottle.  This toner fights acne, wrinkles, and soothes irritated skin.  It is a real treat especially during the colder months.

4.  Apple Cider Vinegar+Water Drink
Sounds disgusting I know but if you can stomach the thought I promise it's not that bad. Apple Cider Vinegar has many antibiotic properties.  It can clear a stuffy nose, prevent indigestion, whiten teeth, soothe tummy ailments, and help with soar throats.  It even helps soothes menstrual cramping and did I mention studies have shown that it aids in weight loss.  So add a cap full into your next bottle of water, it can't hurt.

5.  Aloe Vera Water+Olive Oil Makeup Remover
Aloe Vera has been used for years for it's soothing qualities.  Aloe Vera water (found in most drug stores) is made up of 95% water so it's soothing and hydrating.  Adding oil to your face may seem daunting but no worries especially with olive oil because it resembles the skin natural oils production.  It won't clog your pores or cause any breakouts.  Just add about 1/2 a cup of olive oil to your aloe vera water then shake and voila you have a gentle but strong makeup remover.  This is a great remover for those with sensitive skin.

There you have it folks my favorite all natural beauty tips.  Keep in mind that every single one of these ingredients can be used in a multitude of ways.  That's what makes them so cost efficient.  If I named every way that I use these ingredients I'd have to write a book.  By the way what are some of your favorite all natural beauty tips?

Ridiculous Homage to Summer

Hey

I can honestly say that I'm not a fan of cold weather.   So now that the weather is cooling down I only have the memories of the times summer and I used to share.  So this is what I made for summer...

Well at least I have Fall fashion trends to look forward to but leaving this warm weather behind makes me a little sad.

5 Absolutely Quirky/Strange Facts About Me

You model, eh?
I like getting to know new people and likewise I would like you all to know more about me.  So here five strange/quirky facts about yours truly.

1.  I'm super sensitive.
Example 1:  I cried all night when my brother told me that Smokey the Bear had died in a forest fire and various other animals also die in forest fires.
Example 2:  I was not allowed to sing "The Little Drummer Boy" with my chorus class because would cry every time we sang the part about him being a poor boy too.
Yep, that is what my parents had to deal with.

2.  I speak Spanish.
Hablo muy bien el español. He vivido en España durante 2 meses. Fue increíble y hermoso.  I barely speak it here (in the States) so everyone is always surprised when they hear me speaking to any of my spanish speaking friends.

3.  I am obsessed with the number 236.
I'm not sure if it's an obsession or just a number that I am able to recognize very easily.  I always see it and i get the weirdest advice about it.  I've had people tell me to play the lottery or it may mean something bad is about to happen.  I have no idea if it's bad or good luck or just a quirk.

4.  I am afraid of mascots.
I will run if I see one so Disney World will always be out of the question for me.  I do not like the idea of not knowing who is in that costume.  What if it's a serial killer?

5.  I was born with an extra finger on each of my hands.
Right on the end of my little finger I had an extra finger on both hands.  My mom was horrified and had them cut off.  Maybe the  fact that I was born on Halloween added to her fear.  There are all sorts of myths about children born on Halloween and children born with six fingers.

Well there you have it folks 5 peculiar facts about me.  Well, a few of them aren't that strange but people find them pretty interesting when they find out.  What are some quirky facts about you?

Getting Graphic

Today's post is an outfit of the day and it features myself, my couch, my favorite tee (who doesn't like the Beatles?) and a pretty messy apartment (yikes and sorry).

Beatles graphic tee:  Walmart
Black skirt:  Forever 21
Belt:  ???? I think it came with a skirt
Watch:  Belks
Shoes:  Dollhouse

I like to play with different looks when I go to work.  Yes, I work in a office but it does not mean that I can't have fun.  Now this probably isn't the best option if you work in a more conservative office but luckily for me I can get away with most looks.  No point in not being fun.  Graphic + pencil skirt = a fun office look.

I hope everyone had a great weekend.  Now it's time for us to have an even better, more productive, and overall exciting week.

Huge Announcement!

Today I have some of the greatest news that I could have received this year.  It's one of those moments that as a blogger you wait for and it shows that your hard work is really paying off.  So with that I'd like to announce that my application to the Lucky FABB 2013 Fall conference has been accepted.  I am so excited and very grateful to those who read my blog.  So far this has been amazing.  I would also like to extend a huge thank you to the Lucky Fabb staff.  They are truly awesome.

The conference will take place in New York City. Some of fashion's most influential designers, models, bloggers, and a few celebs will be in attendance.  It's going to be insane and a memorable experience for me. Once again thank you.

Falling For Fall

We are in the last days of Summer and I am finally accepting that fact.  Summer is my favorite season and I hate to see it go but with the fall season comes....fall fashion and beauty.  I love switching my fashion and beauty routine, now that is one thing that I can appreciate.  So without further ado here are the fall beauty trends that I am dying to try.

1.  Va-Va Volume
Yep, you heard right.  The same hairstyles that I dreaded when I was younger are now trending.  Middle parts, huge curls, and big waves are back in.  The bigger the hair the better (even the ponytails are big).

2.  Bold Nails
This fall season says goodbye to neutrals and hello to bold.  No matter if it's dark, bright, metallic or glittery just make sure it's eye-catching.

3.  Cat-Eye Makeup
To be honest some runway makeup looks are much too theatrical and whimisical for everyday wear.  However, this is on look that can be worn without odd looks from onlookers.

4.  Matte Skin
During the warmer seasons we all want that dewy glow.  Well, kiss that goodbye because matte is now in. Take out the powder ladies velvety smooth isn't just for pin ups anymore.

5.  Textured Lips
This season isn't so much about colors as it is about texture.  From flat matte to extreme gloss it seems that just about any color will do just as long as the textures are extreme.  I personally prefer deeper colors but don't be surprised if you catch me with a pink or a red lip.

So as much as it pains me to pack away my warm weather items I am truly excited about what the fall season has to bring.  What are some of the things that you're looking forward to this fall season?
